Cachets for Cosmetics Without Animal Testing

In BLOG by rosalazic0 Comments

Leaping Bunny

Most countries outside the EU still allow animals to be used in tests for cosmetics! But there are several cachets which show you how to buy certified cruelty free cosmetics without animal testing. Products labeled with the “leaping bunny” guarantee that no animal testing takes place on the finished products, their ingredients at all stages of product development by the company, its laboratories, manufacturers and ingredients suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. See the Homepage of the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) for further information.

Rabbit with protecting hand

The German Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the International Manufactory Association against Animal Testing in Cosmetics (IHTN e.V.) have elaborated a stricter cachet for animal testing.
Producers make an obligatory declaration to law that no animals tests are made for the development and production of the end product. Plus, no raw materials are processed which had been tested on animals for the first time after January 1st, 1979. Plus, no raw materials are used which have been tested in animal experiments or for which animals have been killed. No ingredients from dead animals are allowed. Ingredients from living animals must be organic. Furthermore, a detailed list of raw materials including the name of the supplier and a complete declaration of the product’s content on the packing or in the catalogues is needed. If a producer deliberately makes false declarations he has to expect a fine up to 20.000 €. Vegan-Flower

The Vegan-Flower is the only cachet which displays that a product is cruelty free and vegan in the same time. The Vegan Society England created this cachet in 1990 to make it easier for vegans while shopping. It says that a product is completely free from animals and animal testing. The development  of the product and its ingredients, must not involve testing of any sort on animals conducted at the initiative of the company or on its behalf, or by parties over whom the company has effective control.

PROS

+ no animal testing
+ no animal ingredients (vegan)

CONS

– does not meet organic standards

To sum it up, I love the Vegan-Flower because I focus on vegan, cruelty free products. If it’s more important for you that the products/ingredients were not tested on animals, you will be fine with each of these three cachets. What’s your favourite brand without animal testing?
